Makara Sankranthi is an auspicious day called Uttarayan when the sun crosses the equator and enters the northern hemisphere astronomically. It has celestial importance.  Sankranti is celebrated all over India with some regional variations. In Telangana, the festival is called Pongal and it is a four-day celebration. The first day is called Bhogi Pongal. On this day the cattle are decorated, allowed to roam free and fed sweet rice and sugar cane. In some places, Jallikattu or wild bull-taming contest is organized. The fourth day of the festival is Kaanum Pongal. On this day people visit their relatives and friends to enjoy the festive season.
